Well, this is a bit of a late and curtailed gig guide, but there’s plenty – way too much, in fact – for you to cram into the next three days
On Friday 17th in Glasgow James King and the Lone Wolves – one of the post-punk’s biggest nearly-were acts – reform for a show at the Glasshouse
Also on Friday it’s The Birthday Suit at the Electric Circus with Idlewild’s Rod Jones using the band’s hiatus to doubtless plug rather ace single ‘Uh-huh Uh-huh’
And his old bandmate Roddy Woomble is at the Tolbooth on Stirling doing that alt.folk thing that’s sweeping the nation.
Back in Embra, acerbic Ulster punks Stiff Little Fingers are at Edinburgh’s Picture House
And a tip for staff: check the bogs for old rockers hiding out for HIGNFY star John Cooper Clarke on the Saturday
On Saturday, former Husker Du and Sugar mainman Bob Mould at Oran Mor. Whether he’s playing tunes from either period of his career remains to be seen…
The anual multi-venue minifest Stag & Dagger is bacm on Saturday – 7 venues including Sleazy’s, Stereo, and the ABC, and host well over 30 bands – We Were Promised Jetpacks, United Fruit, French Wives, Chris Devotion & The Expectations, Phosphorescent, Wolf People, Rachel Sermanni and Fatherson among others. www.staganddagger.co.uk
In Edinburgh on Saturday, the band formerly known as Bad Books – Book Group are at Pilrig st Paul’s Church Edinburgh
Alternatively, down at the Electric Circus, it’s Woodenbox (sans Fivers), or Spook School at the Wee Red Bar
And, also Saturday, Wasted Youth play the Banshee Labrynth – whether this is the US punk act or the UK goth version we can’t be sure.
We don’t usually bother with tribute acts in these ‘recommendations’ (plus we hate the Beatles) but on the basis that (a) there’s a former member of the Owsley Sunsshine in them and (b) nothing ever happens in Livingston, Them Beatles bring their mop-toppery to the Howden Park Centre
London-based septet Revere play at Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms on Saturday as well (and then a Glasgow show next Thursday). The London-based collective have one member playing a homecoming show – well, as close as she’s likely to get, hailing as she does from Orkney.
Sunday has Seth Lakeman at the Liquid Room – the only gig of note in our listings – unless you count Dodgy, same city, at the Voodoo Rooms. Warning: lineup may also contain The Twang.
And on that note…
