The Musicians of Bremen release their debut album ‘Intolerance’.

Including recent single ‘Breathe’, the nine tracks from the Greater Glasgow-based trio are available to download or stream.

‘Intolerance’ is in fact the first half of a planned double album, with its counterpart, ‘Resilience’, slated for release later this year with the full complement of songs also being released in physical format(s) at that point.

The trio – Fergus Wilkie on guitar and vocals, bassist Alex Baillie, and Donald Crocket on drums – began recording the double long-player in the summer of 2018 with producer Andy Miller (Mogwai, Sons and Daughters, De Rosa, Arab Strap) at Gargleblast Studios in Hamilton.

Work continued intermittently over the next year, concluding late 2019, by which time 22 songs had been recorded with Miller before being whittled down to the 18 which will form the two sets to be released.

As Crocket says: “We had been ready years ago to record an album but then various personal events happened that delayed the process, but we actually never stopped writing over that period – so when we were finally ready we had amassed all these songs that we struggled to narrow down to 14 or whatever so we made a decision to record enough songs for a double album but divide it over two releases so as not to overwhelm people”.

Of the recording process, Baillie adds: “It was crucial for us to represent the dynamic spectrum that the band has on the album as we aren’t always about the energetic, full-on loud assault that we’re known for live, our more clean, stark songs are just as important to us as the ferocious ones and I think that’s reflected well over both albums”.

And of the theme behind the songwriting, Wilkie says: “It’s generally centred around the social pressures that we all experience every day – the manipulation and oppression normal people kind of unwittingly endure and actually perpetuate.

“I’ve never been one for writing much about my own personal experiences or emotions so I’d far prefer to try and highlight issues I’ve realised myself that people may be able to relate to in a different way”.

In lieu of any live gigs to promote the release the band plan individual videos for every album track in the run-up to the second part of the set, with ‘Awakening’ already online.
