Manuela, the project of former Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy and Manuela Gernedel release their debut album, ‘Cracks in the Concrete’.
Austrian Manuela and her British-born husband Nick have been making music together on and off ever since they met in the late 90s in Bavaria, Germany, where they both grew up.
The pair moved to Glasgow together some years later after Manuela was offered a place at Glasgow School of Art.
While living in Glasgow, Manuela performed with the short-lived band White Nights, who released one 7” EP via Franz drummer Paul Thompson’s NEW! label.
While Nick went on to join Franz Ferdinand he continued to make music with Manuela as Box Codax together with Alexander Ragnew, the trio releasing two albums Only An Orchard Away in 2006 and Hellabuster in 2011.
The 12-track opus was recorded at McCarthy’s Sausage studio in London and was co-produced and mixed by Sebastian Kellig. Featured musicians include Jim Dixon (Django Django), William Reese (Mystery Jets), Roxanne Clifford (Veronica Falls) and Paul Thomson (Franz Ferdinand).
Available on CD, vinyl and digital, ‘Cracks in the Concrete’ is on the Lost Map label in cooperation with Munich based label Schamoni Musik and Mexican label, Panoram.
