It is, it must be said, a jam-packed gig guide this week. Best crack on…
Monday 20th kicks us off with Norfolk alt.rock veterans Deaf Havana at The Garage in Aberdeen, while Shed Seven kick off the festive Britpop revival at Inverness Ironworks.
The Sheds are at Aberdeen Garage on Tuesday, while also in Furryboots, The Killers play the GE Oil & Gas Arena.
Deaf Havana head south to Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall, and We Were Promised Jetpacks kick off a two-night stand in Sneaky Pete’s.
In Glasgow, ski masks are the coture of choice for Pussy Riot, who are supported at their Oran Mor show by the equally stylish Bdy_prts.
And quite the decision to make, as just down the road – but presumably clashing – The Burning Hell are at The Hug and Pint.
Elsewhere in the Weej, Black Country emo-ishstsDearist play The Old Hairdressers, Nina Nesbitt is at The Art School, and misleadingly monickered (but still a little bit Krauty) Leeds combo Autobahn are at
Broadcast.
In Embra on Wednesdday 22nd, Shed Seven play the Liquid Room and of course, the second night from We Were Promised Jetpacks at Sneaky Pete’s.
And The Divine Comedy are in the grand environs of Usher Hall while Dearist play Banshee Labyrinth.
Danger! Electric Six are at the Edinburgh Liquid Room on Thursday, which sounds like a dodgy combination.
Same night, Queens of the Stone Age are at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh
In Glasgow, Average White Band play the Royal Concert Hall, while of a marginally more recent vintage is Howard Jones, who’s at the O2 ABC in Glasgow.
We Were Promised Jetpacks take their tour of more (ahem) intimate venues to the Attic Bar in Glasgow (that’s at the Garage) while new contenders for Jetpacks’ ‘Best Band Name’ crown, St Johns Ambience, are at King Tut’s. And the artist formerly known as Ste McCabe… he’s not changed it that much really… Saint McCabe plays Glasgow’s CCA.
In Eeinburgh, it’s fun fun fun with Autobahn at Sneaky Pete’s while Dearist hits Aberdeen, for a show at The Tunnels. And in Dundee, Hunter & the Bear are at Clarks on Lindsay Street.
Always nice to see Irvine on the gig guide, and Blue Rose Code bring the noise (not really) to the Harbour Arts Centre.
In Glasgow, Duke Special‘s at Òran Mór.
On Friday, Concert For Stewart – a celebration of the life of Stewart Cruickshank. At Saint Luke’s (just round from the Barras), performances from friends and colleagues and artists who had their careers boosted by the legendary radio producer.
The lineup includes: The Pastels, Karine Polwart, Justin Currie, Emma Pollock, Rab Noakes, The Primevals, Duglas T Stewart & David Scott, Kim Edgar, The Thanes (featuring Fraser Watson playing the music of The Poets), The Crunchies (featuring members of Teenage Fanclub, Belle and Sebastian and V-Twin), and, Stewart’s own former band – Mowgli & The Donuts. All proceeds raised will go to the charity – Drake Music Scotland.
Elsewhere, Julie Fowlis is at Perth Concert Hall, Hue and Cry play the Liquid Room in Edinburgh, and Adam Holmes & the Embers are in the unlikely settoni of Biggar’s Municipal Hall.
In Dundee, Bed Of Wasps play Conroy’s Basemen while Dearist’s at Deacon Brodie, and in Aberdeen, Uniform are at The Wig (wherever that may be).
In Glasgow, Brix and the Extricated are at Stereo, while of a slightly lesser vintage, Echobelly are at King Tut’s. And former GOrkys’ frontman Euros Childs plays the Glad Café in Shawlands.
And at the Art School, Steve Davis & Kavus Torabi (yes, that Steve Davis).
Saturday sees Duke Special play Falkirk Trinity Church while at Stirling’s Settle Inn (I’ve just realised what they did with that name) Brownbear.
It’s solo blues from Dave Arcari is at Strathblane Village Club while Belfast post-rockers And So I Watch You From Afar are at Òran Mór, and Alasdair Roberts is at the Hug and Pint. And joining the nostalgia circuit, The Icicle Works play O2 ABC 2.
Worthy of mention is the band bringing up the billing at Aberdeen’s Musical Vision – supporting Dark Habits, Geist and Bed Of Wasps is the delightfully-named BOAK. Same night, Campfires plus Hopes Up High are at Captain Tom’s.
And Steve Davis & Kavus Torabi are at the Wee Red Bar,
On Saturday, the nighty Stoor play Beat Generator in Dundee. Also on the bill are Brix and the Extricated – double value!
In Edinburgh, Siobhan Wilson and The Pictish Trail are at the Assembly Rooms.
And at Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy, James Yorkston‘s Tae Sup Wi’ a FIfer series welcomes Philip Selway (out of Radiohead) plus David Thomas Broughton and Kathryn Williams.
On Sunday, Alasdair Roberts is at Aberdeen Lemon Tree, and The Icicle Works play Aberdeen Assembly.
And on Sunday, at Platform in Easterhouse, one of Africa’s greatest living musicians – Stella Chiweshe. The shows from Zimbabwe’s Queen of the Mbira (a 28-key traditional instrument) follows the opening of the Helen de Main art exhibition ‘You Know, Things Like That’ at 6pm.
