Shirley Manson, Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert, Wet Wet Wet’s Tommy Cunningham, and Kathryn Joseph will feature in a new eight-part BBC Radio Scotland show.

Hosted by Nicola Meighan, the weekly summer pop music programme begins on Thursday 1st August in the 9pm slot.

Planet Pop – presumably named after the Edinburgh music festival which took place in the late 1990s – will see the former is this music? journalist present several features within the shows, including one on trailblazing women in a feature called This Woman’s Work (“because everything comes back to Kate Bush”) including Big Mama Thornton, Big Maybelle and Sylvia Robinson.

And ‘Into the Grooves’ is a weekly guest slot where a famous name will talk about their first-ever seven-inches and the songs that inspired them.

In the first episode Shirley Manson of Garbage reveals the first single she ever bought – a song she’s so obsessed by she wants it played at her funeral. She goes on to explain why Ella Fitzgerald reminds her of her mother and the artists that helped her through puberty. As a musician in her 50s Manson describes how her musical heroes Debbie Harry and Patti Smith have inspired her and reveals which shape-shifting pop star she describes as ‘the principal male in my life.’
