Scotland has lost 3 of its most experienced and supportive music journalists in the current meltdown in the Scottish press.
The closure of the News of the World lost Tim Barr‘s column which promoted a range of indie bands to a massive readership.
However, the News International furore has rather masked the troubles at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail. This has seen Billy Sloan, the veteran writer who has been breaking acts such as Simple Minds since the 1970s, has taken voluntary redundancy. And Avril Cadden, whose 7 Days column has profiled a raft of bands including Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad and Admiral Fallow before they got big (!) has likewise left Trinity Mirror, following moves to produce much of the group’s Scottish content south of the border.
