After more than a quarter of a decade of sketchy reports from the thousands of people claiming to have attended it, audio from Nirvana’s 1991 performance in Edinburgh has surfaced online.

The grunge pioneers played a show in Edinburgh’s Southern Bar, on December 1st 1991, the day ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ entered the UK Top 40 – and on the 26th anniversary of the gig, around half of the five song set was uploaded to Youtube for all to hear.

Only around 30 people saw the intimate, five-song set, which raised money for the city’s Sick Kids Hospital. Stripped back to a duo and with bassist Krist Novoselic standing at the bar, Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl were joined on the bill by local band Joyriders, who had persuaded the band to play the charity show, following their gig at Calton Studios on the Friday.

The pair played ‘Dumb’, ‘Polly’, and Vaselines’ song ‘Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam’ – co-written by Eugene Kelly, whose new band Captain America had supported at the Calton Studios show. Sadly, around half of this plus and a Shonen Knife cover, ‘Twisted Barbie’ are missing from the audio.
