Jim Diamond, singer with 80s trio PhD as well as a successful solo artist, has died at the age of 64.

The Glasgow-born vocalist had a total of three top 5 hits – the number 3 ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ as lead singer in trio PhD alongside Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips, as well solo with as ‘I Should Have Known Better, a UK number 1 in 1984, and the theme song from TV show Boon, ‘Hi Ho Silver’, a #5 in 1986.

Diamond’s career started with a Glasgow band, Jade, before the singer was discovered by Alexis Korner, providing backing vocals for the CCS man’s solo recordings before leaving to front Bandit. He then worked with Earl Slick as Slick Diamond before forming PhD.

More recently, Diamond recorded ‘City of Soul’ in 2011 – an album of soul covers in aid of Radio Clyde Cash For Kids which featured among others Wet Wet Wet drummer Tommy Cunningham and Greg Kane of Hue & Cry.

Diamond passed away unexpectedly at his London home on October 10th, leaving his family “deeply shocked by his sudden death”.
