The iconic Lyceum Cinema in Govan is set for a major transformation, reopening in summer 2025 as a vibrant multi-functional venue.

Known as the Lyceum Hub, the revamped space will serve as a music and wedding venue, alongside a café food hall and cinema.

The news comes after local MSPs and councillors lent their support for the project, boosted by the opening of the new Govan-Partick bridge and thw work of the Govan Lyceum Development Trust.

The Grade B Listed building, which has stood derelict for 18 years, had previously been added to the Buildings At Risk Register, but is now undergoing a major redevelopment. An alcohol licence for the building was granted earlier this year, and plans are moving forward to breathe new life into the landmark structure.

Originally opened in 1938, the Lyceum replaced an earlier theatre that burned down the previous year. Designed by McNair & Elder, it was a grand cinema with seating for 2,600. In the 1970s, the space was split for bingo and cinema, but the building closed in 2006.

Businessman Mohammad Choudhry acquired the building in 2014, and now, after years of uncertainty, the Lyceum Hub promises to be a dynamic new addition to Govan, celebrating its rich history while serving as a modern cultural and community space.
