The Glasgow Music and Film Festival has announced its programme for this year’s event, and as its name suggests there is plenty of audio to go with what is a visual-based event.

Among the showings between 20th February and 2nd March is a live set from Admiral Fallow, celebrating their 10th year in existence, who will perform alongside custom visuals entitled Ten Takes, as well as soundtracking William S Manson’s 1951 collection of footage of Glasgow, No Mean City. That’s on March 1 at the Old Fruitmarket.

There’s also a Cannes International Film Festival winner in Dutch minimalist composer Josef van Wissem who will play a live score to Partir To Live.

On a different tack, Pollokshaws Burgh Hall’s Wurlitzer pipe organ will be dusted down to accompany 1920s Manhattan-set Harold Lloyd silent movie ‘Speedy’.

Coming right up to date, at The Arches, Pressure present Requiem For Detroit featuring a DJ set from Carl Craig

At the GFT on February 22nd and 24th there’s 20 Feet From Stardom, an Oscar-nominated documentary about the unsung heroes of music – the backing singers.

And a couple of documentaries from quite differening sources – Mistaken For Strangers is an unofficial tour bio of The National shot by singer Matt Berninger’s brother Tom – at February 22, Paisley Arts Centre & February 25, The Glad Cafe (the latter including a set from Rozi Plain).
Meanwhile, The Punk Singer focuses on Bikini Kill frontwoman Kathleen Hanna, featuring interviews with Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, plus Hanna’s contemporaries and former bandmates from Le Tigre and Sleater Kinney. That’s on February 28 & March 1, at the GFT – the first showing will be introduced by Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry, who is also co-founder of women’s collective TYCI.

Preceding the Film festival proper is the Short Film Festival which runs for the weekend of 14th/15th February. Among the six programmes is one which premieres Adam Stafford’s No Hope for Men Below, a retelling of Falkirk’s 1923 Redding Pit Disaster. Stafford, formerly of Y’all is Fantasy Island, is a previous multi-award-winner for Grangemouth documentary The Shutdown with narrator Alan Bissett.
