News of the demise of Fence Records – the Cellardyke / Anstruther-based record label run by King Creoeote and The Pictish Trail -have been greatly exaggerated over the past few days. This follows Creosote – Kenny Anderson – “sacking” himself from the label last year following a recent lack of involvement in the venture, and then after Johnny Lynch aka The Pictish Trail moving to the island of Eigg, leaving the label with no Fife connection.
Over its almost-20-year existence the label’s roster boasted the likes of James Yorkston, Rozi Plain, Lone Pigeon, U.N.P.O.C., Kid Canaveral, Withered Hand and FOUND as well as the likes of KT Tunstall and members of the Beta Band being associated with the Fife-based Fence Collective.
Johnny Lynch announced the forming of the Lost Map label, which will continue to release music from the remaining Fence artists, including Randolph’s Leap, Monoganon, eagleowl and Kid Canaveral.
And following the initial announcement, King Creosote, who has recently been working under the Alter Ego Trading Company banner, announced that Fence is “alive and well”, and announced that the label will relaunch in January 2014, from its traditional East Neuk base. Before then, there will be the Bunfight at Crail Town Hall on August 31st (featuting Creosote, Withered Hand and Admiral Fallow), a “World Tour of Crail” next February, and following the recent refurbishment of the Dreel Halls in Anstruther, the return of an Easter event which should look a little like the Fence Homegame.
