A new 4,500 music venue could see Dundee rival Glasgow and Aberdeen as a venue for some of the country’s biggest live events.

Set to open in December, LiveHouse is based around the redevelopment of the building which was formerly the Mecca bingo hall on Nethergate, and which originally opened in 1936 as Green’s Playhouse – at the time one of the largest theatre and cinema complexes in Europe.

Further work will mean that only Glasgow’s OVO Hydro and the P&J Arena in Aberdeen have a have greater capacity, with the team behind the development pointing out that Livehouse will be less than 90 minutes’ travel away for four out of every five Scots.

Michael Carolan, who previously led the development of the city’s Malmaison Hotel, said: “We want to keep the transformational momentum going and really build on the good work that has been done.

“Dundee is in the enviable position of having 80% of Scotland’s population within 90 minutes’ travelling time.

“It has been demonstrated elsewhere, in Glasgow for example, that a multi-use events space can transform the surrounding area.

“LiveHouse can bring back increased numbers of people to the city centre, ensuring it is beneficial not only for the venue, but surrounding businesses.

“These are exciting times, and we look forward to opening our doors for the first time in December.”

A second phase of work in 2025 will then extend the space into a multi-purpose campus, adaptable for use as a conference venue, theatre productions, exhibitions, Esports, and, of course, gigs.
