Camera Obscura have announced that keyboardist and singer Carey Lander has died after a battle with cancer.
Carey, who joined the band in 2002, had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a rare type of bone cancer – in 2011. She raised over £50,000 to fund research into the illness via her Justgiving page – which is still accepting donations.
Camera Obscura members Tracyanne Campbell, Gavin Dunbar, Kenny McKeeve and Lee Thomson said via their Facebook page that Carey “was left in no doubt how much you all loved and appreciated her, and we’d like to thank you all for the support and kind words you have been sending to us and her. The band, our music, and all of you who have enjoyed it over the years, meant so much to her.”
The band had recently canceled shows to allow Carey to fight her illness. She had until recently continued to play with the band, saying on her JustGiving page that she felt “quite fortunate in that I have been able to have periods of living something of a normal life in the last four years and to continue playing”.
