La Belle Angelle – the Edinburgh gig and arts venue which perished in the fire which swept the Cowgate in late 2002 – is set to rise from the ashes.

Reopening of the building isn’t scheduled until the second half of 2013, but the rebuilding work, which will see a large hotel on the original site, will have the new La Belle underneath, home to a 500 capacty venue – a little larger than its previous incarnation.

The venue was in operation for around 10 years from the mid-1990s until a blaze destroyed it and many other buildings including popular Fringe venue The Gilded Balloon. In its time it hosted a wide variety of gig including The Libertines, Mouse On Mars, Oasis, and Imperial Racing Club (pictured). More on the new venue at www.facebook.com/LaBelleAngele
