Funk and soul collide in a lively introduction, and hip-hop notes are mingled throughout on their newest single ‘You Won’. It definitely gets my feet tapping for the first minute or so, but reaches a lull midway, and becomes quite repetitive and samey – but just as I’m losing interest the sharp trumpet and violin sounds with blunt electric guitar kick in and I’m captured once again. The song is quite minimal on the lyrics; these aren’t its strongest feature so this is probably a good thing. I’m still unsure what to make of Night Noise Team, but am interested to see what they come up with in the future as ‘You Won’ shows they’re definitely capable of producing some funky beats.
Wee yins
Likeably wonky Scottish indie from the Glasgow 4-piece – thickly accented vocals, strident guitars and drums and a keyboard that sounds like a bank of theremins gaffa-taped together. Which somehow makes the fact it slows down and falls apart after around a minute all the more charming – all serious and playful at the same time, they’re certainly a band that means business.
There are few things more gloriously indie (in the truest sense of that word) than a split single. Peter Parker were responsible for last year’s greatest single ‘Swallow The Rockets’ and whilst this isn’t quite as jaw-dropping it is still pretty damn great. Meanwhile Davey Henderson (see also: the Fire Engines, Win, Nectarine no.9) in his latest incarnation offers up another slice of Bolan meets Prince meets Beefheart. No polish whatsover -but when you’re Davey Henderson, you are free to do what you like.
