Interesting Things at Stirling Tolbooth. An all-dayer – well, music running, it says here, from 4 – 11pm. Or get there a bit earlier and check out the Harry Papadopoulos exhibition in the Tolbooth Gallery.
Music-wise there’s more than a dozen acts performing including some very familiar names – Comfort, Adam Stafford, former Phantom Band man Duncan Marquiss, Apostille (Michael Kasparis), Lost Map gun-for-hire Susan Bear, Gerard Black of Babe / Findo Gask fame, and top of the bill, Liverpool ensemble Ex-Easter Island Head.

While we’re saying “formerly of”, Sunday – September 1st, where did the summer go? – sees Latetia Sadier arrive in Glasgow for a show at Mono. The most recent music from the Stereolab founder was a recording with Thurston Moore, but her album from earlier this year, ‘Rooting for Love’, is exactly what you’d expect – off-the-wall electronic-based strangeness that is shot through with her trademark pop nous. It’s not immediately obvious, but with Manchester’s Psychfest taking place on Saturday, surely the Edinburgh event on Sunday is in some way related? Well, it’s certainly not Reading vs Leeds – there’s not that much correlation between lineups but there’s an excellent range of acts spread between Summerhall, The Caves, The Mash House and the Queen’s Hall in this all-day event. Gruff Rhys is the headliner – but beware, he’s on not long after lunch – and the other must-see on the 30-odd-strong bill just about follows him – that’s Leeds country teasers Divorce. Also worthy of a look at NewDad (who are playing on the ‘southern’ version), Gurriers, Loose Articles, Pigsx7, The Wife Guys Of Reddit, Cloth, and The Bug Cub. See the Summerhall website for more.

Well, anyone wanting a quiet week in the house best stop reading now. Monday 14th November has live shows in Glasgow from Sigur Rós, at the Armadillo, Black Midi at the Old Fruitmarket; Jamie T plays the O2 Academy, and Part Chimp are at The Hug and Pint.
Oh, and The Professionals, still with ex-Pistol Paul Cook on drums, are at King Tut’s.

Sigur Rós head cross country to Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, for a show on Tuesday 15th, while Randolph’s Leap have a rather smaller scale event planned for Sneaky Pete’s.

Things go strangely quiet until Thursday, when Dave Arcari – a fixture in this gig guide a couple of years back due to his regular inline sets – step into the real world for a gig at The Tooth and Claw in Inverness – part of a tour plugging his new album ‘Devil May Care’.
Also on Thursday, Wet Leg are at SWG3 in Glasgow, and Fontaines D.C. play the first of a two-nighter at the O2 Academy.
And Brownbear continue their meanderings around Scotland with a set at Irvine’s Harbour Arts Centre.

The Tunnels, and doing likewise in Furryboots City, Dave Arcari is at The Blue Lamp,

Welsh darkwave (think that’s right) duo Tangerinecat play The Venue in Dumfries, and in Dundee, Plasmas have a show at The Hunter S Thompson.
In Edinburgh, The Little Kicks continue their series of album launch events with a gig at The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh.

On Saturday 19th Forgetting The Future play The Tooth and Claw in Inverness, while in Glasgow, Declan Welsh & the Decadent West play a rather significant show, headlining the Barrowland.

Richard Dawson returns to Scotland since his double-header (with Circle and Hen Ogledd) at Doune the Rabbit Hole with a show at the CCA, and on the city’s southside, The Countess of Fife (former Rezillo Fay Fife plus So You Think You’re A Cowboy guitarist Allan McDowall) are at the Glad Café.

On Saturday 19th, Gordon Giltrap will, we hope, reprise the Holiday 80 theme tune ‘Heartsong’ (look it up, it’s good), at Baljaffray Parish Church in Bearsden. Dave Arcari is at Stereo.
In Edinburgh, Kapil Seshasayee plays Summerhall, and Martin Metcalfe & the Dirty Macs are at TVFKA the Corn Exchange (aka the O2 Academy.
In Stirling, Martin Stephenson and the Dainteees, are at the Tolbooth and Brownbear play Pittenweem New Town Hall

Finally, in Aberdeen on Sunday 20th, Turin Brakes are at The Lemon Tree, Ezra Furman plays GLasgow’s QMU, and members of The Strange Blue Dreams nip into a phone box outside Saint Luke’s and emerge as party band The Shiverin’ Sheiks.

First up this week, Scots-based Romanian singer-songwriter Lizabett Russo launches her new album, ‘While I Sit And Watch This Tree Volume 2’, which is out on Last Night From Glasgow, at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre.

Also in Reekie, Métis (indigenous Canadian) singer-songwriter Ella Coyes aka Sister Ray plays Sneaky Pete’s.

On Tuesday 8th, Russian anarcho-punks Pussy Riot have a show in Edinburgh, at
Summerhall, while Sister Ray is at Broadcast in Glasgow

Wednesday 9th sees Squeeze visit Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, as they launch a new EP, ‘Food For Thought’, profits of which go towards the Trussell Trust (also, bring foodbank donations if you’re going to the show).
In Glasgow, Animal Collective are at Saint Luke’s, while Amateur Cult launches new album ‘The Mirrored Pattern’ at Bloc+ .
And Lizabett Russo completes her small tour, with a show at Gartmore Village Hall, in Stirlingshire.

Franz Ferdinand play Glasgow’s Hydro on Thursday 10th, doubtless drawing from recent release ‘Hits To The Head’, while Jim Bob – formerly one half of Carter USM – has a show at Drygate.
In Edinburgh, it’s the return of Meursault, at Edinburgh’s Summerhall, Spizzenergi and Newtown Neurotics have a punk/new wave revival night at the Voodoo Rooms, and The Nightingales, with Terry Edwards and something of a mini-orchestra in tow, give their own new long-player – ‘The Last Laugh’ – a well-deserved Scottish launch, at The Caves.
And in Dunfermlne, Teenage Fanclub play P.J. Molloy’s.

On Friday, Thurso’s finest, Forgetting The Future, make the long journey south— to Aberdeen, for a show at Cellar 35.
In Glasgow, Spizzenergi (surely Spizzenergi 22?) are joined again by the Newtown Neurotics, at The Hug and Pint. And Dean Owens plays The Tannahill Centre in Paisley, while Brownbear play Falkirk Trinity Church.

Saturday is pretty much all about The Great Western – more than 50 acts in various venues across the West End, including Pussy Riot, BC Camplight, Bug Club, and a slew of local heroes. Check out the preview at is this music?.
That aside, The Icicle Works, plus The Luka State, are at The Garage, and outwith Glasgow, Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 visit Aberdeen for a set at Ogv Podium, Dean Owens plays Crail Community Hall, Brownbear is at The Venue in Dumfries, and ska legends The Selecter have a show at Edinburgh’s La Belle Angèle.

Finally, to Sunday 13th, where only the denizens of Dundee are in a rock’n’roll mood -which sees The Wife Guys of Reddit visit Rad Apples.

Plenty of live music this week with an already difficult choice for music fans of a certain age/disposition (more…)
