Radio Scotland DJ Tom Morton has announced his ‘retirement’, at least from late-night radio.
The broadcaster recently spent time in hospital following health concerns, eventually undergoing heart surgery to repair a narrowed coronary artery. Following his initial stay at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, a relapse saw him admitted to Lerwick’s Gilbert Bain Hospital, emphasising that the late night broadcasting regime is incompatible with making a full recovery – three Morton Through Midnight shows every weekend evidently taking their toll.

Morton has been a mainstay of Radio Scotland over the past 20 years, with his afternoon slot in the early ’00s a great shop window for many Scottish indie bands. This came to an end in 2013 with the aforementioned Morton Through Midnight being broadcast from his home studio near Lerwick.

Following recuperation, the DJ hopes to return to radio work in some form. Just not in the same unsociable, unhealthy timeslot as before.
