KING BISCUIT TIME/PIP DYLAN

King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut

Monday 19th September

A cosy acoustic start from Pip Dylan. And what a nice bloke he is too, with curious and amusing stories and a skilfull use of Spanish guitar, country, blues and folk influences with a broad stylistic and vocal variation, a wee bit of yodelling, and a fantastic trumpet solo made with his mouth alone. It was a real shame we couldn’t have heard more.

The place is heaving, mass love of the Beta Band is whispered, and there’s huge anticipation to hear the Biscuit King in action.

Steve Mason strolls onto stage, joined by Pete Rankine and Colin Emmanuel. Too cool for school? What can I say, indie, rock, and salt shaker action with indie white rap thrown in here and there, house, reggae, electro, dance, and with Mason’s distinctive vocals it’s a mixed bag of groovy business that’s for sure.

We are played an array of ‘No Style’ tracks, some newies, and at one point the guys leave Steve to play some Beta Band numbers. ‘Doctor Baker’ and ‘Simple’ get the crowd buzzing, but these weren’t necessary to keep the crowd happy from the reaction to his own tracks. C I AM 15, the recent single, gets bodies moving and the band at one point do some synchronised robot dancing which is both bizarre and brilliant. Walk the earth before the encore was a particular crowd pleaser, as is a jammin’ version of “Anarchy in the UK’. C I AM 15 is played again last, as a reprise of sorts. Both times Steve jumps to play drums halfway through, as Pete rocks out a bit, and the bongos are simultaneously pounded. What a treat. (Megan Faye)
