Keeping the roots flag flying *may* be De Rosa, whose album Mend mixes Scottish acoustic songwriting with full-on rock. Wed 24 7:30pm Concert Hall : Auditorium Kate Rusby with Roddy Woomble A guest on Woomble s solo folk album, Rusby has been acclaimed as the current queen of the English folk scene Thu 25 7:30pm City Halls : Grand Hall Boys of the Lough and Friends The Irish folk veterans feature guest musicians from Norway and Sweden on this tour, and have for 40 years been at the cutting edge of traditional folk (if that makes sense), having recorded 8 John Peel sessions in their time. Fri 26 Lloyd Cole with Astrid Williamson 8:00pm 8:00pm The Garage Crash My Model Car with Attic Lights A choice between old and new, in a sense - former Commotions and chart star Lloyd Cole returning to his acoustic roots, and supported by 90s Scots indie star Astrid Williamson (formerly of Goya Dress and Shetland native) Or, two rising stars - Hebridean /Glasgow combo Crash My Model Car who display a more American (i.e. grungey/OC soundtracking) sound than their origins suggest, and Attic Lights, who are garnering a name for themselves with their sunny Californian-tinged melodies. Sat 27 8:00pm The Garage Chumbawamba (acoustic) with Elin Fflur It s not all about Tubthumping as any fule knowe - the wumba, long before their Prescott-baiting and major-signing ways, were well-known for their renditions of traditional music including the 90s album English Rebel Songs, and this and new album A Singsong and a Scrap are evidence of their acoustic possibilities. Sun 28 8:00pm The Tron Theatre James Grant with The State Broadcasters Grant has moved through the genres in his time since big bubblegum pop sounds with Love and Money. Tonight he moves to a larger stage than his recently-announced planned tour of fans living rooms, and is ably supported by highly regarded (and previous CC Open Stage winners) The State Broadcasters Mon 29 7:30pm Concert Hall : Auditorium John Martyn: "Solid Air" Already sold out and quite possibly the last chance to see Martyn live, the performance of this 1973 album at London s Barbican is now the stuff of legend, and his CC performance of his groundbreaking experimental folk album may well fall into the same category. Tue 30 8:00pm Concert Hall : Strathclyde Suite Ballads of the Book Poetry meets rock (or folk) in the collaboration between Roddy Woomble and Edwyn Morgan, and the result is a wide-ranging compilation album on Chemikal Underground Records featuring collaborations between the likes of Alasdair Gray, Louise Welsh, Aidan Moffat, Ian Rankin, John Burnside, A L Kennedy, Mike Heron, Aereogramme and James Yorkston. Some of these artists may appear at this special launch event (full details TBC). Wed 31 9:00pm City Halls : Old Fruitmarket Real World Peter Gabriel's label Real World presents its first Scottish showcase and veers between blues (guitarist Skip McDonald, aka Little Axe), sound systems from Doug Wimbish and Keith LeBlanc (Sugarhill Gang, Tackhead) & Adrian Sherwood, (On-U Sound), and the world sounds the label is famed for including Asian fusioneers Joi, Mauritanian singer-songwriter Daby Touré, and from Uzbekistan, Radio 3 World Music Award winner Sevara Nazarkhan. The evening will also pay tribute to much missed Martyn Bennett. Thu Feb 1 8:00pm St Andrew's in the Square Acoustic Affair : Michael Hargan / Mark Geary / The Hazey Janes New York-based Irishman Mark Geary and Glaswegian singer-songwriter Mark Geary, with Dundonian alt-country acolytes The Hazey Janes Sat 2 10:00pm City Halls : Old Fruitmarket John McCusker: "Under One Sky" The remarkable Scots fiddler presents his album - produced in conjunction with the Cambridge Folk festival - with a cast of a dozen performers from across the musical spectrum and indeed from both sides of the border - the indie rock end being represented by Roddy Woomble (of course!) and Graham Coxon. 7:30pm Concert Hall : Auditorium Rosanne Cash: "Black Cadillac", & Roddy Hart The famous family provides inspiration for Cash s current album, with her father and stepmothers recent deaths covered in a trawl through her personal life as well as the full spectrum of American country music. Glasgow singer-songwriter Hart provides support. Sun 3 8:00pm The Garage Aberfeldy & Lior The band s career was boosted massively at CC s Festival Club, but album Do Whatever Turns You On has seen them progress from their folky roots to encompass off-the-wall psychedelic pop, and a sound more befitting The Garage can be expected. Mon 4 8:00pm City Halls : Old Fruitmarket Klezmatics & Moishe's Bagel Blending Jewish traditional music with other world music sounds, the New York act have worked with an eclectic range of artists, including Allen Ginsberg and Ben Folds. Glasgow s Moishie s Bagel similarly draw on klezmer, Balkan, jazz, folk and Middle Eastern sounds for a danceable mix.
