label seeks bands
Joe Soap Records are looking for new bands to work with and therefore want to invite bands to send demos/musical links/gig listings. They say "We don't want to open the floodgates so to speak or waste peoples time so we have some criteria for bands/artists to meet so that we can try and achieve the best results for both sides.
Base Location: Edinburgh/Fife
Gigging: Must have done, or be gigging
Genre..: Pop / Rock, probably guitar driven mainstream stuff. Sorry but no dance/thrash/punk etc
Material: Original songs...
Ideally some young fresh faced enthusiasts with confidence, but who need some mature guidance and support!"

Free recording!
Bands or solo artists are required for part of the final year project in BSc Music Tech Students at Paisley Uni. They're are looking for any bands/solo artists who would be interested in recording a few tracks (2-3,possibly more) in their Pro Tools studio for free. The band/artist will recieve a copy (or copies) of the finished CD.
The only catch (yes, there always is one) is that the recording is done in the Paisley University studio at least once a week (daytimes and evenings to be arranged) and the committment period is November 1st to December 18th.  If after all of that you are still interested please e-mail
as043424@student.paisley.ac.uk before Monday October 24th.

The Big Issue in Scotland are once again on the lookout for bands to participate in a themed compilation CD to be given away with the magazine. Artists are invited to submit songs on the subject of mental health and well-being, for a CD that will be given away free with The Big Issue in Scotland in October, 2004. Artists will be selected for inclusion by a panel of music industry professionals and have the chance to perform at the Glasgow Barfly for a showcase gig during the MusicWorks International Cross-media Music Convention.
Mindset will be The Big Issue in Scotland's second themed CD, which follows up on the huge success of Songs of Freedom, which was based on the themes of miscarriages of justice and was released in November, 2003.

To submit a track for Mindset, please call Vicki on 0141 418 7040 or email V.anderson@bigissuescotland.com for an application form.
Please send in all recordings on CD format with an application form, (please do not send original recordings). Due to the amount of entries we receive, only successful applications will be acknowledged. Please include an SAE if you wish to receive a receipt of your application.

A couple of battle of the bands-style competitions for you to get involved in, if you like that kind of thing:

CPL, at Glasgow's Cathouse, are running ROCK IDOL, a series of weekly showcases running every Tuesday from 31st August to 16th November, which, saythe organisers, are designed to showcase unsigned Scottish alternative bands and select the best talent to compete for various prizes including a support slot with a headline band in the Autumn of 2004, studio time, drum kits, guitars, & amps. The events are for bands over 18* and there's Jack Daniels - the major sponsor -for the runners up!
Demos are required to apply, along with a copy of your bands Biog. Send them to MANAGER, ROCK IDOL, c/o The Cathouse, 15 Union Street, Glasgow, G1 3RB.

*CPL say they will run an under-18 version in future...

and

East Meets West claims not to be a regular BotB, since rather taking place in backdstreet pubs acrossthe country, the 2 main venues will be Glasgow's Barfly and Edinburgh's Liquid Room (with a grand final at the Barrowland- wher else?)
Heats are already under way - the competition runs between June and October - bands can enter by sending a demo to KMR Music Promotions, Trump House, 15 Edison Street, Hillington Industrial Estate, Glasgow G52 4JW.

if you're in a band doing the usual round of sending demos off to all the majors then you could do worse than fire one off to Polydor/Fiction's Scottish A&R (one of only a handful of labels who have a permanent presence north of the border.)

Scottish-based web broadcaster WAMtv are introducing Scottish music videos into its programming of what's usually more 'arts'-based viewing. They're looking to receive more indie vieos to include in their schedule, which may eventualy grow into a proper regular slot, which would mean that bands' videos would be seen by a worldwide audience. VHS and DVD are the preferred formats, but the broadcaster is usually able to take a decent-quality Quicktime or MPEG movie. Either contact them direct via the details on their website at www.worldart.com or send us your CDs to here at Jockrock (contact details via the link on the left) and we'll compile them and submit them for you.
